ABOUT OUR SEATTLE CLASSES

GOT A QUESTION?

What is Rekindle School?

  • We’re an independent educational program in Seattle.
  • We offer fun, affordable classes.
  • We’re a Seattle art school, Seattle acting school, and Seattle film school, all rolled into one.

What’s your guiding philosophy?

  • Our philosophy is that being anyone can learn to write, draw, act, sing, or express themselves creatively in other ways.
  • Training is more important than “talent.”
  • When you take classes, you may find a talent for something you’ve never tried before.
  • As we go through life, people can lose touch with their creativity for a while. But it can be rekindled. We’re here to help.

Where do your classes meet?

  • Most of our classes meet on the University of Washington campus in Seattle.
  • Others meet at community centers around the city.
  • We are hoping to add some classes on the East Side soon.

How long have you been in operation?

  • Since 2002.
  • We started out offering a handful of classes, then added more classes as our program grew.

Do you offer certificates of completion?

  • Yes, in some subjects. Please read this page.

What’s different about Rekindle School, from other Seattle schools?

  • Most schools have a gap of several weeks each quarter during which enrollments are not accepted.
  • When we set our program, we did away with that gap.
  • On the day after a class or workshop begins each quarter, registration becomes active for the same class or workshop for the following quarter.
  • This means that when you see a class, you can usually sign up right away. You don’t have to wait weeks for another opportunity to enroll.

How do I sign up?

  • Just click the “Sign Me Up” link and follow the prompts!
  • You can pay by credit/debit card or Paypal.

Can kids sign up, or are the classes just for adults?

  • Most classes are for adults, and most of our students are over 18.
  • Some teachers do allow younger students, but you should check first.
  • Just email rekindleschool@gmail.com

Do you have gift certificates?

Where are your classes held?

  • Most are on the University of Washington campus (Seattle branch)
  • Others meet in community centers around Seattle.
  • When you sign up, you’ll receive an email with driving and parking directions.
  • Learn more

I’m a teacher, and would like to propose a class. How can I do so?

What  is your policy on withdrawals, refunds and cancelations?

Do you offer team building workshops (or morale workshops) for businesses?

Do you offer certificates of completion?

  • Yes, in some subject areas. Please read this page

Is Rekindle School a part of the Seattle Experimental College?

  • We’re affiliated with them.
  • The two schools are part of the same “business umbrella.”
  • We handle enrollments for the Seattle Experimental College. For more info see this page.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERAQuestions and Answers

Should I take a drawing class before I take a painting class?

If you’d like to take a drawing class, we recommend “Drawing for Absolute Beginners.” But you don’t have to know lots about drawing to benefit from the class.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA3. Isn’t watercolor difficult?
Not at all once you learn a few simple rules, like letting some parts dry before you add more paint. Also, there is a freedom in just allowing the color to move around with the water. You will learn how to paint wet on dry and when to let it flow with wet on wet.

In this Seattle watercolor class, you’ll learn about washes, glazing, blending, creating form with lights and shadows, textures, interesting backgrounds, and other useful hints to make your paintings vibrant and beautiful.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERAMaterials provided by the instructor:

  • Handouts of the various techniques
  • Reference ideas for painting
  • Black line drawings to transfer, if you need them
  • Pencils
  • Paper towels
  • Some additional paints and paper for specific projects
  • LOTS of one on one help and instruction

About the Instructor:

Lonni Flowers is an award winning artist known for her use of brilliant color inspired by the world’s flora and fauna. Ms. Flowers’ fascination with natural life has led her to not just portray beautiful images, but to heighten the impact by altering the intensity of color. Her frequent use of an impressionistic technique draws viewers into the mystery of the artistic expression. Ms. Flowers is a member of Seattle Co-Arts, Artists Connect, the Alliance of California Artists, and currently shows her work at Gallery North in Edmonds, where she also teaches watercolor, acrylic, and silk painting. Her home studio is a busy place where she creates in watercolor, acrylic, silk painting, jewelry, fiber arts, and “anything else that is colorful and fun.”

REMINDER ABOUT MATERIALS:

  • There is an optional $20 materials fee payable to the instructor in class.
  • If you’d rather bring your OWN materials instead, please bring:
  • 140 lb. cold press paper; brushes #8 round, #12 round, and ¾ to 1 inch flat; tube watercolor paints (preferred)…an assortment of colors, but specifically a red, Ultramarine blue, and Lemon or Cadmium Yellow (light).

STUDENT COMMENTS

Great class, well organized. I wish you offered it more often… I’d actually take it again. – Jerry B., Seattle

Mr. Osmar was well organized, and he is an amazing artist. I came into the class brand new at working in ink. I won’t say I’m a polished artist now but I learned some things that I know will help me improve as I practice them. I will be signing up for his other classes in winter quarter. – Jean G., Kent

This is my fourth class…. they’re really fun. I love ink drawing and I loved that we had most of the day to draw. The information about materials and types of surfaces to ink on was very helpful. Thanks! – M.J. (Seattle)

The instructor’s artwork is incredible. And I can see a big improvement in my own inking after just one day. The class is solid and helpful. – Mel R., Seattle

Good times Nils, great class! – Dave I., Seattle

Student comments

What students are saying…

I was the redhead who drove in every week from Tacoma. It was worth it. You really have something going if you can take someone like me and turn me into an artist, well, a beginning artist anyway! But that’s way ahead of where I was. Thanks again Nils! – R.M. (Tacoma)

The class was well organized and you took us along step-by-step. – Mary J. (Redmond)

I liked the opportunity to learn the basics in a non threatening environment. (unsigned; comment submitted online)

Nils, Just wanted to let you know that I completed my application to the Game Animation Certificate program, and as of a week ago received notice of my acceptance. One of my portfolio pieces was a charcoal figure based upon one of the exercises from class – and of course, I’d never touched charcoal before meeting you. Thanks again for all the tips and encouragement! Your classes really helped polish my skills and boost my confidence a great deal. — J.C. (Seattle)

I loved Lonni’s class. She gave us room to experiment but also gave us lots of helpful information. – Beth G. (Seattle)

Your teaching style was a pleasure to learn by and I enjoyed your class very much.. – Ruth B. (Seattle)

Thanks for taking some time before the class to help me figure out which class I should take. You weren’t just trying to “sell” me a class, you helped me find the one that would be a good next step for me. – M.J. (Seattle)

The (Perspective Drawing) class was great. Something clicked about halfway through the course. I feel like I really understand it now. – Dave A. (Kent)

I took Drawing Faces and Portraits two weeks ago. I was honestly amazed. I had never drawn people before. I’ll be back for more classes in the future. – Theresa C. (Bothell)

Our philosophy

Our philosophy is that being creative is a natural part of life. Anyone can learn to write, draw, act, sing, or express themselves creatively in other ways. Training is more important than “talent” — and when you take classes, you may find a talent for something you’ve never tried before.  If you’d like to have fun and start learning a new skill, we’re here to help.

Class locations

Class locations include the University of Washington campus, Lake City Community Center, PNC, Greenwood Center, and more.

Fun, focused classes

Some of our classes have several meetings; others are one day workshops.  Many introductory classes, such as Acting 101, have follow-up classes (such as Acting 102, Acting 103, Let’s Make a Movie) that students are free to take if they would like to keep learning.

You can always sign up!

Most schools have a gap of several weeks each quarter during which enrollments are not processed. For example, when spring classes end for the quarter (in most schools), it may be a month or two before summer class dates become open for enrollment. When we designed our program, we did away with that gap.

This means that on the day after a class starts each quarter, registration becomes active for the same class for the following quarter. (If the spring session of “Widgets for Wabbits” begins on June 1, the summer session of “Widgets for Wabbits” opens up for enrollment on June 2) (literally the next day).
This means that you don’t have to wait weeks for the next round of enrollments to begin. You can sign up any time, for any of our Seattle classes.  Early enrollment is recommended, because most classes fill up.

SEATTLE ACTING CLASS COMMENTS

“…I wanted to say thank you for your help and guidance in the early stages of my acting career. It has been a great journey that started in your beginning acting class. I am happy to report that I just met a very awesome goal. I will be a day actor in the TV series Grimm this week. It was your coaching that set and codified the foundation that helped get me where I am today. Thank you so much for your help.   If you would like to, please feel free to share my story with your other students and on the website.

…I want to thank you for inspiring me to follow me dreams. I left Washington. I am down in California. I have started a television production company and I auditioned for a Harley Davidson Commercial yesterday as an actor. Everything is moving at light speed…and in a positive direction. It all started with you in that classroom at the U of W. – Robert C., Hollywood

Best wishes and with my sincerest gratitude, Joey Coverson”

SEATTLE FILM CLASS COMMENTS

…I just want to thank you for the (crash course in filmmaking) classes. I never learned so much over a short period of time and remembered it. You wasted no time on the non-essentials.

I greatly appreciate the fact that you were very receptive to everyone’s questions. Your experience, dedication, and passion for film making made this a fantastic learning experience for me.

I want you to know that taking this class has truly made a difference for me. I lost the fear to shoot and produce films. It has given me the knowledge and skills I was seeking and the confidence I need to step into film making.

I have to tell you — you are an incredible teacher! I cannot thank you ENOUGH!  I’ll definitely recommend this class to all my friends. Thanks so much for the highly engaging and inspiring class. – J. Vega
