FAQ

Are your drawing classes open to beginners?

Yes. However, if you’re brand new at drawing, we do recommend that you start with “Drawing for Absolute Beginners” or “Learn to Draw in a Day.” But if you’re already comfortable with drawing and sketching, it’s fine to just take whatever classes look interesting, in any order.

What you learn in one class will make the others even easier, but they’re each meant to stand on their own.

Do students need to bring anything to the classes?

You can either bring your own materials, or, for most of the classes, buy a kit in class. See the course descriptions for more details.

Are these one day drawing workshops? Or ongoing classes?

Some of our drawing classes meet for several weeks. Others are one day workshops, or “one night wonders” which are complete in on evening. All of them are fun learning experiences, and are great for beginners.

Which class or classes should you take?

It depends on your goals. If you’re brand new to drawing, we recommend taking either Drawing for Absolute Beginners or Learn to Draw in a Day first… then take anything else that looks fun.

hand54322In this class, you’ll learn to how to draw objects based on simple shapes, then add shading and textures to make your drawings look real and three-dimensional.

Plus, how to use the “jigsaw puzzle” technique to make things look more accurate when drawing from a reference photo.

Frequently asked questions

Why are there two versions of this class? (“Drawing for absolute beginners” and “Learn to draw in a day”?)
Students whose schedules made it difficult to do a weekly class requested a one day version.

What’s the difference between this class and the weekly version? The classes are very similar and are both good introductions to drawing, but the weekly version, “Drawing for Absolute Beginners,” has more practice exercises and more hours of instruction. Students in “Drawing for absolute beginners” have more practice time in and out of class, including homework assignments. But the core class is very similar.

Should I take the weekly version or the one day version? If your time is tight, Learn to Draw in a Day lets you take the “heart” of the class in a single meeting.  If you like having more time to learn and practice each step, the five week version may work better for you.

Student comments about Drawing for Absolute Beginners

…Just wanted to let you know that I completed my application to the Game Animation Certificate program, and as of a week ago received notice of my acceptance. One of my portfolio pieces was a charcoal figure based upon one of the exercises from class – and of course, I’d never touched charcoal before meeting you… Your classes really helped polish my skills and boost my confidence a great deal. — J.C. (Seattle)

Thanks for taking some time before the class to help me figure out which class I should take… – M.J. (Seattle)

… You really have something going if you can take someone like me and turn me into an artist, well, a beginning artist anyway! But that’s way ahead of where I was. Thanks again Nils! – R.M. (Tacoma)

The class was well organized and you took us along step-by-step. – Mary J. (Redmond)

I liked the opportunity to learn the basics in a non threatening environment. (unsigned)

I was looking around for Seattle drawing classes, and  found yours in the Experimental College catalog, then checked out the Classesandworkshops.com web page…  I have to tell you that I’m honestly amazed. I couldn’t draw anything before the class. The first drawing on the first day was a revelation – it actually looked like the object it was supposed to be! The successive classes were also very helpful.  I’ll be back for another class in the fall. – Shel K., Seattle
