In this fun four-week class, you’ll learn how to create characters, memorize dialogue, and perform short scenes. Whether you’re looking for a class just for fun, or have aspirations to some day act in movies or on stage, all levels are welcome. For students 18 and older. ACTING 103: ACTING WITH EMOTION ⟾ starts on Sunday 6/24

In ACTING 103 (also known as ACTING WITH EMOTION), we’ll do some  improv, group exercises and scene work exploring a range of emotions, including anger, fear, love,  happiness, sadness and more, focusing on expanding our range as actors and moving beyond the pretense of emotion. If you are a beginner, please take Acting 101 and Acting 102 first.  For students 18 and older. You can take this class just for fun, or as part of our Certificate Program in Acting.

ACTING 104 is one of our foundational acting classes, building on the techniques and approaches students learned in ACTING 101 and ACTING 102, and ACTING 103 (Acting with Emotion).  The focus is on learning to listen and respond, finding a genuine connection with your characters, and bringing more realism and believability to your performances. It’s for students who would like to move their acting to the next level. You can take this class just for fun, or as part of our Certificate Program in Acting Fundamentals.

ACTING FOR THE CAMERA ⟾ starts on Thursday 6/21

On-camera acting is different from acting on stage.  In this class, students will learn how to give their best and most effective performances when being filmed; how to walk to a mark without looking at it; how to make the camera their scene partner; and how to make their performance larger or smaller, while staying true to your character and his or her motivation. This class can be taken by itself, or applied toward our Certificate Program in Acting

AUDITIONING 101 ⟾ starts on Sunday, July 22

In this information-packed workshop, you’ll learn:

  • Where to find auditions Seattle area
  • How to identify roles that would be good for YOU to audition for (and roles to avoid)
  • How to increase your odds of actually getting cast
  • How to prepare for an audition
  • The six things you should always bring to every audition
  • Audition etiquette: how to make a good, not bad, first impression
  • How to film your own audition
  • How to identify your type and age range (and why both matter)
  • The differences between stage auditions and camera auditions
  • How to find the “good” acting agencies, and avoid the scams
  • how to get professional-quality headshots taken at an affordable price
  • How to film and audition, then put it online
  • How to tell which “auditions” are scams, and which are legit
  • How to write a good acting resume, whether you’re experienced or a beginner.
  • You’ll also learn an easy and effective way of doing cold reads, and learn the etiquette or auditioning. 

As the class moves along, we’ll do practice exercises and warm-ups to make more comfortable with the auditioning process, and you’ll get honest feedback about how to improve. The instructor has directed for stage and film for over twenty years.  His movies have played in international film festivals. LET’S MAKE A MOVIE ⟾ starts on July 21 – meets on Saturdays

In this class, designed to give actors film acting experience and help them to get good materials for their reels, we’ll learn a few key things about filmmaking, then film an actual short movie in class. Every student who wants to be in the class film will be in it. In previous quarters, genres have included mysteries, vampire movies, science fiction, fantasy, detective, drama and comedy.  You can take this class just for fun, or as part of our Certificate Program in Acting.

Nils Osmar was born in Alaska, and grew up in a wilderness area on the southern coast. He now lives in Seattle. He has made his living in the arts for over thirty years, working as a writer, visual artist, teacher, and filmmaker. He currently teaches through the University of Washington's ASUW Experimental College. He is the Director of an independent educational program, Classesandworkshops.com, which offers courses in visual, written and performing arts in Seattle, Washington.
