How to make money as an artist

This class meets on Sunday May 23rd
Sponsored by: ASUW Experimental College Location: Seattle University district
Taught by Nils Osmar  QUESTIONS? Call 206-420-1309 or email

Sunday, 5/23 ~ 3 p.m.-6 p.m. (1 meeting) (U.W. campus) Tuition: $39

In this class we'll explore a number of ways to make an income from your artwork, whether your goal is to work part time or full time, as a freelance artist or employee, make extra money on the side or make your entire living as an artist. We'll learn about the differences between selling fine and commercial art, and brainstorm about ways to move your doodlings from a hobby to a source of income. You'll leave the workshop with a good overview of job and career possibilities in the field, and strategies for pursuing your goals. Whether you draw, paint, or do artwork of another sort, whether you're interested in fine or commercial art, the information in this workshop can help. The instructor has made his living in the arts for over twenty years.

Student comments on Nils's classes

I really enjoyed this class! The instructor was very relaxed and really encouraged all of us in our efforts, and answered questions and gave guidance whenever asked. The class was extremely low key and low stress, so it was kept fun and the pace was kept slow enough where I didn't feel rushed, but fast enough that I didn't get bored.   I'm signing up right now for another of Nils' classes, he's a great instructor! (unsigned; comment submitted online)

I liked the opportunity to learn the basics in a non threatening environment.  (unsigned; comment submitted online)

Nils, Just wanted to let you know that I completed my application to the Game Animation Certificate program, and as of a week ago received notice of my acceptance. One of my portfolio pieces was a charcoal figure based upon one of the exercises from class - and of course, I'd never touched charcoal before meeting you. Thanks again for all the tips and encouragement! Your classes really helped polish my skills and boost my confidence a great deal. -- J.C. (Seattle)

The class was well organized and you took us along step-by-step. - Mary J. (Redmond)

Your teaching style was a pleasure to learn by and I enjoyed your class very much.. - Ruth B. (Seattle)

Thanks for taking some time before the class to help me figure out which class I should take. You weren't just trying to "sell" me a class, you helped me find the one that would be a good next step for me. - M.J. (Seattle)
