ACTING CLASSES


CLASS 110: Beginning Acting

Acting is fun! In this enjoyable introductory class you'll learn how to create characters, memorize dialogue, and use your voice, body and emotions as acting tools. Plus: warm­ups and theater games, improv and scenework, and information about Seattle's film and theater scenes. Whether you're looking for a class just for fun, or have professional aspirations to act on the stage or in movies, everyone is welcome. Instructor has directed stageplays and feature films, and taught acting for over fifteen years. His movies have played at international film festivals. CLASS 300:
Let's Make a Movie
Days and times: Mondays, 7-9:30 pm

In this class we'll create and film a short independent movie from scratch. Students are free to act in the movie, help write or choose a script, and help out on crew. (You can choose how you want to participate.) You'll learn how movies are made, what it's like to act in one, how to operate a prosumer camcorder, mark scenes, set up lights, record audio, and more. Everyone is welcome; no previous acting or filmmaking experience is necessary. Instructor has directed both shorts and features. CLASS 120: Actors workshop: Getting ready to audition
Days and times: Saturday 10 a.m.-5 p.m.
Dates: August 13 only (one meeting)

A fun day-long workshop for students who would like to learn more about the auditioning process, and work on a monologue. Course covers headshots and resumes (including how to put together a resume if you're new to acting), monologues, and more. You'll learn about auditioning opportunities in Seattle, and which callboards are the most important; how to choose a good monologue, that showcases your skills as an actor; how to walk to a mark, slate for the camera, and do profiles. Plus, students who want to will a chance to rehearse and perform a short monologue in class, with a camera rolling so you can watch it later. Taking this class will help students get more comfortable with the process of auditioning, work the kinks out of their monologue, and get revved up to go. CLASS 140:
Actors intensive: Exploring characters and emotion

In this class, we'll work through a series of fun and interesting exercises designed to improve students' abilities to portray a range of different characters, and make it easier to convey and communicate emotions. The focus is on finding the connecting points that will make the characters real and believable, and allow us to portray them in an honest and effective way. You'll learn ways of letting emotions surface as an actor, letting them influence your performance in a good way, then letting go of them and moving on. (Actually nice skills to have in our non-acting lives too.) You'll learn, grow, take some chances and try some new things, and have fun. CLASS 210: Anyone Can Draw! Pencil and Charcoal Drawing for Beginners

Anyone can draw... this means you! In this class, we'll work our way through a number of fun and easy, step-by-step exercises designed to train the eye, hand and imagination to work together. You'll learn about shapes and shading, pencil and charcoal drawing, "right brain" drawing, proportions and perspective. Most students notice a striking improvement in their artwork by the second class. Nothing to buy or bring; all materials are provided. Absolute beginners welcome! CLASS 220: Figure Drawing: an easy step by step method

In this class you'll learn how to draw realistic human figures using an easy step-by-step method. We'll start out by sketching some figures based on simple, easy-to-learn shapes, learn about human body proportions, then add finishing details. The method taught in this class is fun, easy to learn, and works great whether you're drawing from a model or imagination. CLASS 240: Perspective for artists: How to make your artwork look real and three-dimensional

Whether you draw or paint professionally, or just doodle for fun, knowledge of Perspective can make your artwork look more realistic and three dimensional, and solve common artistic problems. In this easy, step-by-step workshop, you'll learn the basics of one, two and three point perspective, including: vanishing points and horizon lines ... how to make some objects in your drawings look close to the viewer, and make others look further away. Plus, you'll learn ways to add a sense of depth to your drawings and paintings, even in those times when you may not want to use formal perspective. Acrylic Painting for Beginners

In this enjoyable introductory class, aimed at folks who've never painted before, you'll learn how to mix and blend colors, use brushes, and paint some simple objects. You'll learn a few basics about color theory and composition, and how to paint using acrylics. We'll then move on to paint things like trees, mountains, clouds, rocks, and still lifes, using an easy step-by-step method. Even if you don't know an artist's brush from a toothbrush, you'll have fun, learn a lot, and get off to a good start. CLASS 255: Painting Portraits in Acrylics

Interested in painting faces and portraits, but not sure where to start, or how to get results you're happy with? This class will help. We'll start out by doing an easy monochrome (one color) painting, in which we paint some simple shapes and get a sense of the head and face as solid three dimensional forms. We'll then practice painting details such as eyes, ears, noses, mouths, and hair. CLASS 260: Pastel Painting at Green Lake!

Spend the day drawing nature outdoors! We'll meet first in a classroom about ten minutes from the lake, and practice some pastel techniques for drawing foliage, water, and other subjects, working in soft, easy-to-blend oil pastels. After that, we'll head down to Green Lake to spend the day drawing and "painting" the colors around us! (If it rains, we'll paint from projected slides.) CLASS 270: Cartooning for fun and profit

CLASS 310: Filmmaking 101: Making better movies and videos

Want to learn the basics of filmmaking, but not ready to spend $30,000 for film school? This class will teach you what you need to know, at a tuition you can afford. You'll learn how movies are made (the three stages of production, and what needs to be done during each stage); the differences between standard and high def camcorders, consumer, prosumer and pro models, and how to find a camcorder that has the features you need, at a price you can afford; camera angles, including closeups, medium shots, and how to use them to tell your stories; how to record high quality audio, and avoid common audio problems; how to get your movies into film festivals; and more. CLASS 320: Documentary Filmmaking

You don't need a fancy camera or a lot of money to make a documentary. You just need a camcorder, a microphone, a computer for editing, and knowledge of how to go about it. In this class you'll learn how to plan and organize your documentary; how to set up and film interviews; how to get good audio and lighting under field conditions.  Students will get experience thinking up interview questions and filming an actual interview in class. Photoshop is fun! In this easy, step-by-step class, you'll learn the key elements of the program, including layers and filters, selection tools, color correction, fixing exposure problems, cropping and rotating, removing dust and scratches, and more. Plus: how to copy an element from one photo and paste it into another; how to use the cloning tool; navigating the program; and how to work with text. Writing can be fun! In this class, students will learn about the elements of short story writing, get practice coming up with stories of their own, and have opportunities to get feedback from the instructors and others in the course. The focus is on developing our skills and learning to let the process happen easily and spontaneously. Also: info about copyrighting your short stories and making money as a writer. Instructor has written stories, articles, stageplays and screenplays. CLASS 550:
Start writing your screenplay!

In this class, open to all levels, you'll learn how screenplays are written, and have opportunities to write some short scenes and "mini-scripts," hear them read aloud, and get feedback on your writings. We'll focus on plot and structure, script formatting, dialogue and action, and what goes into writing a tightly written, effective and marketable script. Plus: tips for getting an agent and pitching your screenplay. The instructor, a Seattle filmmaker, has written over 30 screenplays.
