Seattle Art Classes
(a note from the instructor)

Hello! I'm Nils Osmar. This page has information about my drawing and painting classes, which are
held in Seattle, Washington. Most of them take place on the Seattle branch of the University
of Washington campus,
about five minutes by freeway from downtown Seattle, and are
sponsored by the ASUW Experimental College, a non-credit program for the general public
run by the ASUW (Associated Students University of Washington).

I work as an artist, writer and filmmaker, and have developed classes over the years in
those subject areas. (I've made about half of my living as an artist and illustrator since the 1980s,
and have been teaching for about twenty years. During that time I've done everything from
fine and commercial art, realistic and humorous illustration, to cartooning, storyboarding,
and computer graphics.) I currently offer several different drawing and painting classes:

Drawing for absolute beginners
Painting for absolute beginners
Figure Drawing for beginners
Drawing Faces for beginners
Drawing in pen, brush & ink
How to draw clothing
Perspective drawing
Cartooning

Dates and times and course descriptions are listed below.

My philosophy as a teacher is that anyone can learn to draw or paint. I went into teaching
twenty-plus years ago thinking this was probably true, and have found it to be the case.
Everyone seems to have an impulse to draw; we see something in front of us, and feel like we
"should" be able to draw it. But when we pick up a pencil and try, the results aren't always
what we'd hoped for. So we (or many of us) give up and conclude that we don't have any talent.

The truth is that "talent" is much less important than information and training. Drawing
and painting are easy and natural skills, no harder than other ordinary things people do.
If you can walk, or drive a car, you have the skills necessary to learn to draw. If you haven't
been able to in the past, there are understandable reasons why that was the case,
and I can help you to find a new approach that will work for you.

People sometimes say it's just a matter of practice, but this isn't quite accurate. You need to practice
the right things. Just as it's helpful to learn to play scales before learning the piano,
there are some basic exercises that can help develop your drawing skills.

Classes and instruction can help, because they guide you through specific exercises
designed to start developing your foundation skills.
I've had countless students
over the years who've told me they thought they would never be able to draw,
but found that they could after just a few lessons.

People often ask if it matters what order they take the classes in. For example, should they
take
Drawing for absolute beginners before taking the other classes? Some
students have found it helpful to do so; others have started right off with courses like
Drawing Faces or Figure Drawing, and done fine. (All of the classes are aimed at beginners,
but some folks may need more practice than others.) If you're not sure which class to start with,
give me a call or drop an
email and I can help you figure it out.

All of my classes except for Painting for absolute beginners include the art materials
at no additional charge. I bring in drawing pencils, paper, erasers, etc., for students to use in class.
You don't have to pay any extra for them, they're there for you to use.

The exception is
Painting for absolute beginners. For that class, you can either
bring your own acrylic paints, brushes and canvas paper, or buy a materials kit in class.
The kit for that class costs $35, and should last you for weeks or months of painting.
Or, again, you can bring your own materials for that course if you'd prefer.

Improv for Beginners: Acting without scripts

Improv is fun! In this lively, energizing introduction, held in the TPS space in the Seattle Center, we'll explore a number of approaches to improv. Whether you're a beginner who's never tried acting before, or an experienced actor looking to develop your improvisational skills, this class will provide a lively, supportive environment for exploring the theater form that many people consider to be the most alive form of acting. We'll do warm-ups and theater games, then move on to longer forms.

Most folks who've been exposed to improv are familiar with the comedic approach, from companies such as TheaterSports and shows like The Groundlings. But it's not only about comedy. It's about exploring the full range of human emotions and experiences, getting comfortable in front of an audience, and learning to support and rely on ourselves and others. It trains us to think quickly, trust our impulses, pay attention and think well about each other. Experience in improv helps us to develop confidence on and off stage, and live in the moment.
