Hello. I'm Nils Osmar. I currently teach three classes related to acting through the University of Washington's ASUW Experimental College:
Beginning Acting
Beginning
Acting 2
Let's
Make a Movie
The classes meet on the U.W. campus, about five minutes by freeway from downtown Seattle.
About my
background
I've made my living in the arts for over two decades, working
in theater, film, writing and visual arts. (I love storytelling,
whether it's telling a story with words, pictures, or directing
actors in a stage or screen production.) I spend most of my
time these days working on movies, as a director, producer, and
editor.
My films have played in both local and international festivals. I've also directed actors on stage in settings ranging from the Seattle Fringe Festival, to the New City Theater Directors' Fest and other venues.
My philosophy as a teacher is that acting is a natural skill. Learning to act has to do with re-connecting with our own most honest impulses, listening and responding, having fun, taking chances, and trusting ourselves. It's fun, challenging, and an opportunity to be different than the way we appear to be in our daily lives, to explore other aspects of what it is to be a human being.
Some people take acting classes because they're exploring the possibility of a career change, and are hoping to make their living as actors. Others do it for fun, to take a break from their lives, or to get over their fear of speaking in front of groups. All of these motivations are fine. Whether you have professional ambitions, or just looking to loosen up and have some fun, the classes will help.
Beginning acting
Acting is fun! In this
enjoyable class, held in Seattle (and open to everyone), you'll
learn how to create characters, memorize dialogue, and use your
voice, body and emotions as acting tools and perform short scenes
onstage in front of other students. Plus: warm-ups, theater
games, improvisational acting, information about the Seattle theater
scene, how to audition. Great for beginners, and for those
wanting to get back into acting after a break from it. Instructor
has participated in live theater for over twenty years as an actor,
playwright, producer and director, and has taught acting classes
in Seattle since 1996. He is the creator of an award-winning television
series, The Edge. His films have played at international
film festivals. More

Beginning acting 2
A follow-up class for people
who have taken Beginning Acting, and would like to keep learning
and improving. Focus is on creating and exploring characters,
increasing our emotional range as performers, and developing our
physicality. Plus: some practice auditioning. More

Let's make a movie
In this class we'll create
and film a short independent movie from scratch. Students
are free to act in it, help write or choose a script, help out
on crew. It's a fun way to find out what it feels like to
be in front of the camera (or behind it), great for people thinking
about producing movies of their own. (No previous acting
or filmmaking experience necessary.) (Note: if you're looking
for training in filmmaking, be sure to also take a look at our
FILMMAKING
classes. More
